A Sonic Net reduces damage to sunflower by blackbirds (Icteridae): Implications for broad-scale agriculture and crop establishment

چکیده

Blackbirds, such as red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), are notorious agricultural pests and damage crops at multiple stages of growth. Our aim was to test a novel deterrent, the use sound designed mask communication among birds (termed “Sonic Net”), deter (Icteridae) from target areas maturing sunflower crops. The Sonic Net masks species by delivering “pink noise” that overlaps with frequencies uses for acoustic communication. If cannot hear predators or conspecific warning calls their perceived predation risk increases, they relocate an area lower risk. Working local producers in North Dakota, USA we set up experimental sites three fields were actively used mixed-species blackbird flocks. In each field, established two 0.2 ha plots measured initial 63 individually-marked sunflowers. We applied treatment one paired field. At end 20-day period, total damaged on sunflowers plot calculate change sunflower. all fields, treatments substantially reduced percent sunflowers, 28.6% (95% CI: 12.5–41.7%), 63.6% (57.2–69.0%) 22.6% (16.6–28.1%) Burleigh, McIntosh, Emmons, respectively. addition, higher available seed experienced damage. predict effect may be greater other crop phases types, establishment phase ground cover During there is relative lack tall, three-dimensional vegetational structure, which would allow more effective spread offer fewer physical refugia suggest both larger scale tests efficacy protecting early growth further explore usefulness this technology protection.

A sonic net excludes birds from an airfield: implications for reducing bird strike and crop losses.

Collisions between birds and aircraft cause billions of dollars of damages annually to civil, commercial, and military aviation. Yet technology to reduce bird strike is not generally effective, especially over longer time periods. Previous information from our lab indicated that filling an area with acoustic noise, which masks important communication channels for birds, can displace European St...

Fitness of Crop-Wild Hybrid Sunflower under Competitive Conditions: Implications for Crop-to-Wild Introgression

Understanding the likelihood and extent of introgression of novel alleles in hybrid zones requires comparison of lifetime fitness of parents and hybrid progeny. However, fitness differences among cross types can vary depending on biotic conditions, thereby influencing introgression patterns. Based on past work, we predicted that increased competition would enhance introgression between cultivat...

Evaluation of elevated bait trays for attracting blackbirds (Icteridae) in central North Dakota

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) became an economically important crop in North Dakota in the 1970s, providing a major source of food for post-breeding blackbirds (Icteridae). Reducing local blackbird populations with rice grains treated with an avicide is one proposed alternative for reducing sunflower damage. In fall 2007 and 2008, we evaluated the idea of attracting blackbirds to rice-baited...

Large grazing birds and agriculture—predicting field use of common cranes and implications for crop damage prevention

Increasing numbers of previously threatened large grazing birds (cranes, geese and swans) are causing crop damage along their flyways worldwide. For example, the number of reported incidents of crop damage caused by common cranes Grus grus, followed by regulated inspections and governmental compensation in Sweden, has increased over the last few decades and was valued at 200,000 Euros in 2012. ...
